“Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow,
The year is going, let him go,
Ring out the false, ring in the true.”
- Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Snowy road in Perthshire, Scotland. December 2012.
I’ve heard a few Scottish people say that you should only wish someone Happy New Year once the year has dawned, which is why so many people here say “Happy New Year when it comes“. Well, it’s come, it’s here! We’ve just toasted the New Year in, watching the celebrations around Scotland on t.v. and going outside to see the beautiful stars in the sky and to hear the clamour of many fireworks all around us. We also opened up the windows, front and back, to let the old year out and the new year in. So: Happy New Year, everyone! I hope this year brings you all many blessings, and I hope the road before you is smooth and interesting. Here’s to 2013!
Happy New Year to you and your family !!

I was just thinking of my Scottish friends and knowing that the new year is upon them. For you, my friend, I wish that 2013 would be full of blessings and health and wellness for you and your family. “This day is a new day that has never been before. This year is a new year, the opening door.”

What a lovely idea..to open the doors of your home to let out the old and welcome in the new
Yesterday was a clear day and after church Mt. Hood beckoned me to drive close to it and snap photos. I thought of you as I did so, Christine. MH was sooooo fabulous in the crisp cold air. I came home and posted to share the glory of it all. Blessings of good health and joy to you and yours in 2013! xx from Gracie

A fantastic photo, Christine! I also love the idea of opening windows to let out the old and let in the new. Freshens things up, doesn’t it, with newness and life!

Ring Out Wild Bells –it was our closing hymn at church Sunday. My husband groaned, ‘I hate this song!”
But it does give one a little different perspective, thinking of 2012 as a “he” as in “let him die…” Best wishes to you!

Here’s returning all your good wishes for 2013, doubled! We only have one door to our house, hence opening the windows – but I think the original tradition is to open the front and back door.
ajb, what a lovely verse! I hadn’t heard it before.
Jenyjenny, I didn’t know there was a hymn made of the poem! Luckily, your husband won’t have to sing it again for another year.
