Farewell, friend

Coming home this morning from working in the church garden, I was extremely sad to see that an old neighbourhood friend is soon for the chop:

Although I understand that in cities trees can do damage to pavements and pipes – and after all I myself had just been ruthlessly clearing the church’s perennial borders of rampant lady’s mantle! – I felt quite upset to read the order of execution:

I had never before noticed the hearts carved (? I presume) into the tree’s bark.  One is very clearly above the sign, and two are to the right of the sign.  It was as if the tree was telling me, All Will Be Well in the grand scheme of things.  I was happy that at least, today being a local holiday, my friend would have one more day in the sun in all its glory.

Farewell, lovely tree.  I’ll miss you, and so will your inhabitants:
