Happy National Poetry Day in Scotland!

Every year the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh organise a series of events to celebrate National Poetry Day in Scotland.  They also print and distribute free postcards with poems on them – I’ve sent many of these postcards over the years.  You can imagine my amazement and delight when I was asked if I would be happy for one of my poems to be used!  The theme this year was “Home”.

Now the truly humbling thing is the company my poem is in.  George MacKay Brown, Carol Ann Duffy, Norman MacCaig, Iain Crichton Smith…

The full set of eight National Poetry Day in Scotland 2010 postcards, produced by the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh.

If you live in Britain, and fancy owning just such a set of postcards, the Scottish Poetry Library will send them to you in exchange for a 1st class SASE addressed to NPD 2010 and sent to the Scottish Poetry Library, 5 Crichton’s Close, Canongate, Edinburgh EH8 8DT.  Wherever you may be, you can send an e-card from the Scottish Poetry Library‘s website.

Regarding this particular poem, I must thank three of my Gaelic teachers, who conveyed so much of the beautiful singularity of the language to me in the course of my studies:  Seumas Grannd, Meg Bateman and Donald Meek.  Tha mi fada ‘nur comain / I am greatly indebted to you.

So, Happy National Poetry Day in Scotland!
