First snow

We did think it had been getting a bit cold.  This morning, what we thought was just the later-every-day arrival of the sun turned into a mini snowstorm for about 20 minutes.

First snow this fall: the back garden, 8 a.m., 20 October 2010

Then, the sun came out and shone for most of the day! It was chilly but beautiful, and the low winter light seemed particularly golden.

A faint dusting of snow on the lawn, and lovely golden light. King's College, Aberdeen. 8:50 a.m., 20 October 2010.

I like the local pronunciation of the word “snow”:  it’s said “sna”.  The falling ending of “sna” seems to perfectly express what it refers to.
