Clouds of daffodils and sea mist

Aberdeen is really very beautiful in the spring.  There are many areas of the city liberally strewn with daffodils (and crocuses earlier on).  A few evenings ago, we went for a walk by the River Dee:

The River Dee, Aberdeen - looking West at about 8 p.m., 18 April 2011.

It’s been very dry here, and the days have been sunny. But the past few mornings we’ve woken up to “haar” – sea mist. It comes in off the North Sea and cloaks the town until it’s burned off, about mid-day. So while much of the rest of Scotland was enjoying a beautiful sunny morning, the view down Union Street at 8:30 a.m. today was this:

Looking East down Union Street, Aberdeen, morning of April 22nd, 2011. I'm standing less than a mile from the North Sea - hence the haar.

I don’t really mind the haar – it has such a beautiful name, for one thing. It was Earth Day today and I thought of how much I love this planet and how lucky I am to live here. Happy Earth Day!

  1. Hi Christine, Happy Earth Day and thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures.Have a nice Easter weekend….

  2. absolutely beautiful. it’s like someone threw gold dust all over the place. it’s all buttery looking and the lights across the river make it look like a Thomas Kinkade picture. Happy Easter to you and yours!

  3. Fog and daffodils here too. Happy Easter to you!

  4. Not so much in the way of haar over here, but the daffodils are certainly nodding! I remember Summer a few years ago when the rest of the country basked in glorious sunshine yet on the East we had haar until mid afternoon every day. Happy Earth Day and Eastertide, Christine. It is so good to be able to share in this beautiful creation that is our home. xxx

  5. Those daffodils glowing in the twilight are a sight to be seen. Thanks for the photo.

  6. I think the haar is quite atmospheric! And the daffs are lovely. Ours are but a memory now. I always enjoy your photos. Happy Easter!

  7. The haar looks mystical as does lots of Scotland. We had something hanging over our mountains yesterday by we don’t have such a lovely name for it.
Today the sun is out again, the garden is looking lovely but crying out for some rain.
Happy Easter to all of you xx

  8. Happy Earth Day, and now Happy Easter too….hope you’ve had a good one. Wonderful pictures! I’m rather behind with, well, everything, so I’ve been catching up on your blog…bravo! It’s most entertaining.

  9. Haar in Edinburgh too on Friday, clearing as we came up the A9. Fond memories of Aberdeen haar, and the sound of the foghorn at the harbour. And the daffodils in Seaton Park. At the start of the summer term most rooms in my hall of residence had a jar of filched daffs!

  10. Dear All,
Thank you so much for your very kind comments. I see we haven’t been the only ones to have haar. I wasn’t sure that the daffodils photo “worked” but if you liked it, I guess it did! It’s such a pleasure to share things like that on this blog.
We had a perfect Easter (no haar, just a beautiful sunny day and a great, celebratory, church service). I hope you all enjoyed your Easter too, whatever you did!

  11. Gorgeous, gorgeous daffodils.
