Voluptuous Beauties in Aberdeen

My title may attract more spam than usual, but what the heck.  I can’t think of any better way to describe two things I recently saw.  The first, in a rare moment of sunshine and warmth, is a beautiful Art Deco sculpture on a building.  I think the horse is just as voluptuous as its rider:

Lady Godiva? Granite carving on the side of "Rosemount Square," Aberdeen.

The building she appears on is a beautiful example of Art Deco architecture, interpreted in granite:

Rosemount Square, Aberdeen. June 2011.

And look what greeted me yesterday evening:

Peonies beckoning, Aberdeen, 26 June 2011.

I believe these are “Sarah Bernhardt” peonies.  They certainly are dramatic, and I wish I could convey their beautiful scent over the internet.  They seemed to be waving at me over the wall.

As I write, it is pouring down out of the heavens, but nevermind.  It’s been a good start to the week, the last week of school for the Dafter who is enjoying her new school much more now.  I wish you a very good week too!

  1. Such a beautiful city! And the peonies…. I can smell them from here! Thank you for the eye candy! xx Karen

  2. I love Art Deco. What a beautiful sculpture.
And peonies are a real favourite of mine.
    Lovely pics!
    Have a wonderful week!

  3. Thanks for the peony pictures. I don’t have a place to grow them in my yard and I love them.

  4. Christine, this post has such a fresh feel to it, and the header image is a stroke of genius.

  5. Hi Christine,

No wonder you stopped to look at the sculpture, it’s quite riveting. I’ve never seen anything like that before on a building. I am rather enarmoured with Art Deco now also, due to a high tea at the Hyatt in Canberra, a gorgeous Art Deco Hotel, it changed my opinion of the style and of course watching Poirot is almost a feast of Art Deco.
Just an aside, no cardigans needed for us on Sunday on our day out, actually when the girls go off to school it is cool in the morning but they wear summer clothes as it warms up to about 22 degrees by 10am. Not much of a winter! Hope you and yours are snugly and cosy.
Don’t the peonies look lovely against that stone!

  6. the horse and rider certainly do command your attention. it’s beautiful stonework. the peonies are gorgeous!

  7. Your comment about the spam made me laugh, and the peonies gave me a yen to at least plant something in my window box. Lovely.

  8. Thanks for the comments, everyone!

Karen – I’m glad you were able to smell the peonies through the computer after all!

Suzy – I’m so glad you liked the photos, thanks! I’m glad you like Art Deco – I’ll keep that in mind.

Suze – I hope you can “borrow” other people’s peonies like I do?!

Martin – well that is high praise! Thank you.

Vicky – as I said to Suzy, I will keep Art Deco in mind. There’s not a lot of it around, but if I start looking… who knows? Your winter sounds like our summer! In fact, warmer than our summer…

ajb, I’m glad you like the horse and rider, and the peonies. It’s always nice when other people share your (my) enthusiasms!

Kelly – I’m glad I gave you a laugh, your blog has certainly had me chuckling away. I hope you do plant something in your window box!
